Recreating the Squadron
"Don't give up the ship" ~ Captain James Lawrence, USS Chesapeake
With the stroke of a pen on June 18, 1812, America declared war on Great Britain. The often overlooked period in history may have resulted in the beginning of a true American identity where its people began to see their country as one nation rather than a collection of states with different interests. The war also brought America's national anthem. It was the Battle of Baltimore in September of 1814 that inspired Francis Scott Ket to write the glorious words that would later be set to music and become the anthem that, to this day, represents the spirit of America.

As plans for bicentennial celebrations were being forged, we learned that Maryland was organizing for two years of commemorative events for the Star Spangled 200. The importance of Maryland's involvement in this moment in American history propelled members of our parent organization, Hispanics in History Cultural Organization, Inc, to propose participating in this grand memorial. Thus the recreated Chesapeake Flotilla Artillery was born.

Our members had so much fun sharing War of 1812 history with the public and honoring Barney's Flying Squadron with our impression, that we continue to participate in War of 1812 events and activities. And, when an event requests it, the Chesapeake Flotilla Artillery can quickly change sides and portray Royal Navy sailors from the HMS Dragon.
